Conspiracies run very deep. Sometimes even wedding dates are set and seasons occur specifically to advance evil causes.

To generate some more buzz I’d like some people’s opinions on some ideas Quentin and I were rolling around. These are not finalized…. Just looking for feedback.
Player of the Year:
1) We are thinking of taking 1 dollar from each buyin and putting into a pot for the player of the year. It would be between 300-400 dollars I’m assuming, and would be a nice little kick for people that decide to come out to the events.
2) Points changes – Mulling over an overhaul in how points are determined for Player of the year. The last couple years it’s come down to basically doing really well in the first tournament. (because it’s always the largest turnout.) We were considering giving fixed points at the final table instead of basing it on turnout. (so the person that takes 1st in the Omaha event gets the same amount of points as the person who takes 1st in the NL Hold’em event.
3) Extra points for placing in the main event. We’ve considered this but I’d like feedback on it. Basically there are two schools of thought on this subject. Players should receive more points for placing in the “main event” because it’s a higher buyin tournament and points shouldn’t be any different for the higher buyin event. I’d really like to hear thoughts on this subject especially.
4) Satellites – What kind of satellites would you like to see for the main event? Would you like a $40 tournament on Thursday night instead of the 7pm tournament? Would you like a $20 rebuy on a Friday/Saturday?
Please provide feedback and SPREAD THE WORD! I’d really like the 4th annual GSOP to be the biggest and best! |

I think a really easy way of determining the POY is the person who ends up with the most $.
That would probably make the $40 event with 100 players less important to finish well in than the $200 even with 50. So it would probably come down to the final event. _________________ -Eric

| Maybe money with some bonus formula for final table appearance (to make sure the less attended events carry a little more weight since the POY hopefully would show some ability in the non NLH events). Oh yea, and bonuses for any one who can prove they are at the WSOP and have to miss two events. |

The big problem with that is that first place in the Main event last year was something like $3500 and I think that would be a hard number to come up with playing in the other 4 events with a first place of around $1000.
I think that the player of the year should show skill in all the games and that POY should not be judged heavily based on the Main Event. |

Here is my idea. You award points for getting further in the tournaments. The first event always pulls the most people. You base the points on a full table of knock outs. If you are one of the first 10 people out you get 1 point if you are in the next 10 people to be knocked out you get 2 points and so on until you get to the final table. I believe Q and Greg said that the first event is going to be limited to 100 people. So if you make it to the final two tables but not the final table you'll end up with 9 points for that event. Then the final table is where the points scale up. I would say start 10th place at 13 points and then give an extra 3 points for every place after that.
Here is how you keep points going for people who show. Since the first even NLHE is going to draw the most poeple what you do is treat all the other games as if it were a 100 person even field or 10 full tables. If the PLO game only draws 40 people give the first person to be knocked out the same value in points as the person who was knocked out in 40th at the NLHE event. Then you are encouraging people to sign up and play a game they might not otherwise be inclinde to play and if you get a smaller crowd you're not penalizing people for the field being smaller and you have set amount for the people who show at the final table and not giving them a rediculous lead after the first event. _________________ A true test of a poker player isn't what hand he will make a call with but what hand he will fold when he knows he is beat. |

I actually agree with Tom's second paragraph about same amount of points based on 100 players even if only 40 show...then that 40th spot gets points according to that spot!
I have given out over 40 flyers so far so I think we should be having a huge tournout this year...hopefully!!!
This should be sweet! |

Hey Spike,
The only problem with giving everyone in the tournament points is.... having to keep track of everyone's points.
I did that one year and I don't think I ever want to do that again.
I like your idea if we apply it to the final table... but keeping track of some 200+ different peoples points is way too much work when I"m actually trying to play in these events as well as run them
To Eddie,
THank you for handing out so many flyers... I hope that you changed the date on the ones we handed out on Thursday... (I doubt people are going to read the "all information subject to change part".) |

I will have to speak with Q... but I believe you are mistaken. We have enough chairs/chips for 120+ people.

The only events you can pre-register for are the Main Event and the Heads UP event. I encourage you to pre-register for the Heads-UP... we are limiting it to 64 players so we don't have to do another crazy format like we did last year.

Nope... but you can bring your own

Resonator... I'd worry more about winning FIRST before you decide where to spend it at.
BUT..... I'm installing a platinum gold pole in my basement and I'm quite flexible IF the situation should present itself |

It's not my fault you all took it the wrong way :-p
Quite flexible doesn't have to be physical.... for example.. I could be flexible in allowing you to service of the platinum gold pole... 4 use with strippers that you buy :-p. |

| We'll need to count the chips again but I think we have enough for somewhere between 120-150. We have always had over 100 players for the first event and we would never turn someone away after they came out to play, unless we absolutely didn't have the room. |

A weighted point system is a good idea for POY...if you dont want to record for every player, maybe just do the final 2 or 3 tables for the NLHE, LHE, and PLO events...maybe the top 8 for heads-up event....top 2 or 3 tables for the Main Event. You could always give points on a weighted average like 100 pts for first, 90 for 2nd, etc. The Main Event points should be doubled, as it is a larger buy-in....i dont know the model that WSOP uses for their POY, but its worth looking into. or just eliminate POY and have an inviatational event for the top 20 finishers or so overall...like a $100 event or something....wasnt this done in the past? _________________ "Everyone plays poker exactly the same way. Hey all,
My vote would be to somehow keep the TOC with the extra seats going to the top point getters and/or having the top 20 or so having to play into the TOC table. I always thought that was great.
As for the points, I think some sort of weighted point system based on the amount of players and buy-in. For the first four events, I would establish a top percentage of the field that would get points...say 25%...then do it similar to the old GSOP system and add points as players get eliminated. Then add bonus points for final table.
ie: Event #1 100 Participants...25th place 1pt, 24th 2pts...etc. then the Final Table 1st Place 25pts + 20pts (FT Bonus), 2nd Place 24pts + 18pts, 3rd Place 23pts +16pts...etc
Event #2 60 Participants...15th place 1pt, 14th 2pts...then the Final Table: 1st Place 15pts + 20pts, 2nd Place 14pts + 18pts...etc.
Then for Main event, multiply the regular points by a certain amount. I guess X5 would make sense since that is in proportion to the Buy-In, then keep the Final Table Points the same (persuming the field will be smaller for that event).
Just a thought.
All in all, I always thought the TOC was the best part of the series, but either way they are great and I will be at every event if possible. |

| Other than supplying some chips, we don't do anything as far as side games. The players can choose whatever they want to play and at what stakes. I think in the past it has been mostly $1-$2 NL, and .50-$1 NL. |

single table buy ins of $25 for 10 people first $200 and second $50...something like that could be happening |

I have been asked where are the results of last years 2007 players?
when going to the main page of www.grandrapidspoker.com and you scroll all the way down and you then click on tournament results, all you see is the past events of 2005 & 2006, which does not include 2007 does anyone know what's up with that??? |

Well i've did a few leagues like this and turnouts are always the problem so we just said ok all are based on a 40 person turnout if less show points still base on 40. 40th gets 5 point 39th gets 6 38th gets 7 and so on but the top 2 get a 5 point bonus for second and 10 point bonus for 1st. I just see it being the only fair way and even tho its top heavy makes it just that much more competitive. Lemme know what u think. Oh if you dont finish in top 40 then you get 0 Points saves everyone time on adding the points up and if u arent top 40 u no good anyways right lol??? I feel as if all tourneys score the same tho even bigger buy in b/c POY should be cumulative not a big banked player who can just win the 200 buy in and get POY with hardly any other good places in other events.

Can't make it - will be recovering from Lasik surgery. I will likely only be able to make the LHE and Main Event.
And yes, it's important to learn how to play other games well besides NLHE. If anyone learns how to play PLO well, teach me please. _________________ "Everyone plays poker exactly the same way. As they please." |
