Alright, I have spoken to Little River Casino in Manistee and gotten the scoop for the Great Lakes Poker Championship for this year. The event will be much different than years past, but here's all the info I was able to get:

The GLPC Main Event will be held on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14. The buy-in for this event will be $450 + $50, so a bigger buyin than year's past.

Every day Little River is offering 1-table satellites into the main event. These satellites will run for $50 + $10, but Little River can accomodate a satellite for as few as 4 people, at $125 + $25 each. So far they have yet to run one, but I'm sure that will change as the event grows near.

The Friday before the tournament (October 12) will be a supersatellite into the Main Event. The cost will be $125, and will start at 12:00 noon. The top 20% of the supersatellite field will win their way into the Main Event.

This year there will also be preliminary events the week before the tournament. The schedule looks like this:

Monday, Oct. 8 - $90 NLHE tournament
Tuesday, Oct. 9 - NLHE rebuy tournament - $50 entry, $20 rebuys, $20 add-on
Wednesday, Oct. 10 - $60 NLHE tournament
Thursday, Oct. 11 - no tournaments running

The Main Event will start at 11:00 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 13. There is a maximum of 200 participants in the event. If it fills, that will be a $90,000 prize pool.

The structure for the main event will be very generous towards poker players, and give a lot of opportunity for play. Each player will start with 10,000 in chips, and blind levels will be 45 minutes in length. On Saturday there will be 9 levels of play, with remaining players finishing on Sunday. The blind levels look like this:

25/25
25/50
50/100
100/200
150/300
200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1000
600/1200
700/1500
1000/2000 (lost track after that)

For the event, Little River has set aside 50 hotel rooms with a special rate of $79 per night. The rooms are first come first serve, and I believe all 50 are still available. This deal expires October 1.

You can register for this event over the phone if you would like, and they will take credit card. The number for the hotel is 1-888-568-2244, sorry do not know the direct line for the poker room so you will have to get directed there.

Needless to say, I will be heading up to this event for sure. If anyone else is planning on going, perhaps we can all work out some carpooling arrangements to save on gas money.

I am definitely pumped for the new blind structure (400 BB's to start!), and thought Little River has done a great job with the events in the past. They feed players well, and there are bathrooms and a bar close to the playing area.

Let's bring the title to Grand Rapids!

Going to try and get this as a birthday present, i would have liked to see the 25/25 blind turned into a 75/150 although it is extreamly soild structure.

You want the blind structure to be worse? I don't get it?

A high buyin, 10,000 chip tournament with an awesome structure, at a casino (in my opinion THE casino for well run tournaments) is the most amazing thing to happen to poker in Michigan in a long time...

I hope that I can get the money together to play in it... I feel like I need to play in this tournament.

I didn't really understand either Q, but just because the blinds are small doesn't necessarily make for a better tournament structure.

I'd take a tournament that started out with big bets at 1% of the starting stack and stretched out slowly for hours before the big blind got to be 10% of the starting stack and continued at that pace. That's much better to me than a tournament that starts out with big bets at .5% of the starting stack and rockets up to 10% of the starting stack in an hour.

In fact that was a complaint [among many] about the blind structure at the WSOP, they started off small to make players think they had a better structure, but got relatively big quickly. At the HORSE Event the players actually complained that the starting blinds were too small at the beginning and because of the limit nature of HORSE it made the starting levels essentially meaningless. That's something they fixed this past year in the HORSE event, but there's still a lot of complaints about the other structures.

Yes Eric, lots of good points on blind structures but overall I know that Little River has a very slow and well timed gradual structure for their bigger tournaments.

Why bother starting with 10,000 in chips if you're going to start the blinds at 75/150? Why not just start the blinds at 25/25 and start with 3,000 in chips... It's all about BBs combined with structure and 400 BBs and a great structure is what is exciting about this tournament.

I think Tim means omit the 25/25 and insert a 75/150 but otherwise leave the structure the same. Tim doesn't like blinds doubling that early. But given the stacks, it really does not matter here much.

Unless antes are involved (and they should be), you can almost last the entire first day without playing. Based on the formula I use to gauge the speed of tournaments, this is the best I have seen in Michigan by far.

Bruce got it right, i meant to remove the doubling of the blind by moving the 25/25 out. I really dislike the SB and the BB being the same, the only reason to add a step like this is to lengthen a tournament. That might be an option if they (2 blinds later) didn't double the blind.
Visually to me it's very jerky for a good blind structure, it's like looking at something Davinci did in fingerpaint. I'll spreadsheet this out and link the image to illistrate.

As you can see they blinds double twice early (100%) a SOLID structure should fit in here and not have a number above 50% in the INC columb. Obviously this is a good game, just to see such glareing momentum shifts early is like a cold sore on a supermodel.

I think the INC formula is irrelevant in a tournament in which you are starting with 400BB.

with the blind structure the way it is now after 2 hr 15 minutes blinds will cost 1.5% of starting stack. (100bb if you have 10,000 chips)

with yours it's 2.25% of your starting stack. (66.6 BB if you have 10,000 chips)

In addition to that... I have my money on the 25/25 level SPEEDING UP the tournament. More people are gonna mingle in pots they have no business in trying to hit a hand and get crushed. the 25/25 level will lead to more bottom straights getting crushed by nut straights, smaller flushes to big flushes, and maybe even a few set over set hands. These are all hands that donks will throw their tournaments away for.

I'll even make a side bet that more people go out during the 25/25 round than the 25/50 round

I'll take that action.

Even money right? With a tie for an equal number in both rounds being a wash?

I might be in for a friendly "last longer" bet with anyone else who is playing in the event. Just for fun - like $20 or something.

Mark, I am up for that. Smile

I called and reserved my room tonight. I had to take a smoking room as the non - smoking were gone, so I would advise anyone that wants a room to call now.

Sure it's relevant, your 400BB is 200BB on lv2 and 100BB on lv3 and 50BB on lv4. Doubleing the blinds is bad.

Just got the flyer from Little River in the mail. A month ahead of time is much better than the week notice they gave for their last tournaments. Here's some added information from the flyer:

Monday, Oct. 8 - $75+$15 NLHE tournament Starting Chips: 3,500
Tuesday, Oct. 9 - NLHE rebuy tournament - $50 entry, $20 rebuys, $20 add-on Starting Chips: 1,500
Wednesday, Oct. 10 - $50+$10 NLHE tournament Starting Chips: 2,500
Thursday, Oct. 11 - no tournaments running

You must sign up in person or over the phone. To guarantee your registration, your seat must be paid for by 12:30 pm on the day of the event. Held in the Little River Poker Room. Limited to 46 players.

Friday, Oct. 12 - $100+$25 Super Satellite Starting Chips: 3,500
Held in the Little River Conference Center. Limited to 200 players

For the main event: registration open now through October 11th. To reserve a seat, it must be paid in full. Play begins at 11:00 am. Limited to 200 players.

I just called Little River and booked my room for Friday and Saturday nights. I was told by a manager in reservations non-smoking rooms with two queens or one king are still available at the tournament rate of $84. Anyone who has booked but not receiving a non-smoking room may want to call back to check availability. I look forward to playing with several of the AoC regulars in a couple weeks.

Thanks for the info Greg. I called and had my reservation changed to a non-smoking room. She didn't know why I was told that one wasn't available before.

You can register now for main event, but it says the early event registration Mon., Tues, Wed. events is open on Oct. 7, 10am.

Looks like the wife might just let me go up for the Monday event.

I know some of you guys are very conscious of tournament structures---during the 7 in 7 tournament series, I played in the 75+15 NL event---you start with 3500 in chips, the blinds start at 25-25, and levels are 20 minutes, sounds pretty decent, but the jumps were enormous. I was fortunate enough to make the final table, and when the blinds got to 500-1000, the average stack was 7500.

The rebuy event was much better, when the blinds hit 500-1000, the average stack was about 35,000.

Yea I have heard the structure for their normal tournaments is nothing great - however, the fantastic structure of the Main Event should hopefully make up for that!

For those that are planning on going up Friday for the super satellite, you should call now to reserve a spot. I just got off the phone and he said there are just a few spots left. I was number 58 to sign up so far. They are just taking names, not payment to hold a spot.

Alright, I was the 69th person to register for the Friday qualifier (in poker, I call that hand "dinner for two"). Poker room suggested to get there by 11:00am to get signed in. The event starts at noon.

As of tonight, there are 85 people registered for the Saturday Main Event. I think it will come close to filling up.

I can't make it to the satellite on Friday because I'm doing orientation for a job I'm starting Monday. Good luck to everyone who is playing on Friday.

For awhile I was thinking I wasn't going to be able to play in the GLPC at all but thankfully it is looking like I'll see you guys up there this Saturday.

Good luck to everyone who plays.

As of yesterday 30 seconds before dinner break I am out. It was a battle of the blinds, on the turn it took a 9 to make a straight, I had A9 and my opponent had T9. After betting preflop, and on the flop, we ended up all in on the turn when we both had gotten the straight. Unfortunately the river was a spade putting four spades on the board and my opponent had the 9 of spades.

As of yesterday at the dinner break:

I'm out
SteadyCash is out
RogerS is out

Cory "goldenboy" was still in
mbreon was still in
brucel was still in
I think that Steve "Dunk" was still in

I ended up finishing 11th in the Main Event.....Cory was 14th or 15th. Just got home so too tired to type more, but no final table appearances for the Grand Rapids crew this year.
